Today’s Chart of the Day is from a Wall Street Journal article titled “Where Have All the Good Stocks Gone?” and shows the amount of investment funds from 1996 to 2022. Today there are 11,782 funds compared to only 4,642 individual stocks.
Though a shocking number, keep in mind, there are probably 100+ funds that mimic the S&P 500 alone, and many funds have 5+ different types of funds, all invested the same way, but each has a different way they charge investors.
Finally, remember with only 32 chess pieces, after just four moves there are 288 billion possible chess positions. Now imagine having 4,642 of those pieces (a.k.a. stocks). In that scenario, the 11,782 in funds is not so out of the question.
